How the calculation works
- Floor area = length × width.
- Tile needed = floor area × 1.10, adding the 10% extra that Lowe's and Daltile recommend for cuts and breakage.
- Boxes = tile needed ÷ coverage per box (printed on the box), rounded up.
Example
Floor length: 10 ft · Floor width: 12 ft · Coverage per box: 11 sq ft · Extra for cuts: 10 %
Result: 12 boxes.
Tips before you buy
- Use more extra for diagonal or herringbone layouts and for large tiles in small rooms.
- Daltile suggests keeping leftover tile as attic stock for future repairs from the same dye lot.
- Check that every box has the same shade and lot number.
- Always confirm coverage and yield with the manufacturer's label — products differ.
FAQ
Why add 10%?
Edge tiles are cut and some break. Extra tile from the same lot also means repairs will match later.
Can I use this for wall tile?
Yes — enter the wall's width and height instead of the floor's length and width.
